Every Cause of Beatification and Canonization has two phases: the Diocesan and the Roman phase.
DIOCESAN PHASE
Since the reputation of holiness, which Mama Omeogo enjoyed while alive,
continued to increase after her death, with many testimonies of
spiritual favours obtained through her intercession, on 26th July 2017
the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Most. Rev. Callistus V.C.
Onaga, approved the petition letter of the Postulator of the Cause,
Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Michael Chime, to start the diocesan enquiry on
the life, the heroic virtues and the reputation of holiness and of
intercessory power of Mama Omeogo.
During the Diocesan inquiry, information was gathered. The testimonies
and documents on the reputation of holiness and heroic virtues of the
Servant of God Mama Omeogo were handed over to the Dicastery for the
Causes of Saints in Rome, after the closing session of the Inquiry which
was held on June, 10th 2021.
ROMAN PHASE
The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Most. Rev. Callistus V.C.
Onaga, has appointed Dr. Cristiana Marinelli as the Postulator of the
Roman Phase. The Postulator of the Roman Phase under the guidance of a
Relator of the Dicastery, is among others in charge of preparing the
“Positio” i.e. the dossier that brings together the critical biography,
and the evidence collected during the diocesan inquiry suitable to
demonstrate the heroic virtues of the Servant of God and her reputation
of holiness. The Positio will be submitted to the judgement of nine
Theological Consultors. If the majority is in favour, the dossier passes
into the hands of the Cardinals and Bishops who are members of the
Dicastery. If a positive opinion is also expressed by them, the Pope can
authorise the drafting and promulgation of the Decree recognising the
heroic virtues of the Servant of God, who will be officially declared
“Venerable”.
For the Beatification, a miracle must be attributed to the Venerable.
Once the miracle has been verified, the Pope issues a decree declaring
the miracle and the Venerable receives the title of “Blessed.” A second
proven miracle is required for the Canonization, i.e. for the Blessed to
be declared a saint.
Let us pray to ask for the beatification and canonisation of the Servant
of God Mama Omeogo and invoke her help so that she may intercede with
God to obtain special graces or favours for ourselves or others.
